Tooth development begins during early pregnancy. At this stage, the basic tissue for future teeth starts forming in the baby’s jaw.
(6–8 Weeks in Utero)
Small tooth "buds" appear where the baby teeth will eventually emerge. These are the first signs of individual teeth forming.
(8 Weeks in Utero)
The tooth bud grows and starts to take on a cap-like shape. Cells begin organizing into parts that will form enamel, dentin, and pulp.
(9–10 Weeks in Utero)
Tooth structure becomes more defined. The enamel and dentin begin forming, and the shape of the tooth crown becomes clear.
(11–14 Weeks in Utero)
Hard tissues like enamel and dentin are fully laid down in layers, preparing the tooth for eruption.
(From Late Pregnancy to Infancy)
Baby teeth start to push through gums, usually beginning with lower front teeth. By age 3, most kids have a full set of 20 primary teeth.
(6 Months to 3 Years)
Baby teeth start falling out to make room for permanent teeth. Continues until late teens when adult teeth in place.
(6–12 Years)
